I am a child of the 80′s and music has always played a central role in my life. I have very wide-ranging tastes in music but the music that got me through my teens years always seems to bring out special memories for me. Like most of us I don’t listen to that genre very often but that doesn’t diminish the impact that some of this music has had on me.
One such song was Last Chance by the band Shooting Star. Signed as the first North American act by the upstart Virgin Records in 1978 their 1979 debut album contained the song Last Chance. Last Chance was a wildly roaming yet decidedly forceful urging to believe in yourself and to take action because, “you could be dead tomorrow.” This song struck an immediate chord with me and this message that we are all called to stand up and live a greater life than most of us actually are has become a core focus of my life.
Below are the lyrics to the song and a YouTube video for those that either want to relive the early 80′s or for those who want to mock and ridicule, we are here to serve you as well. The video is not an official release (MTV did not exist until 1986) but it is a clever montage of images. Video montages like this are fairly common on YouTube and many are pretty bad, but I thought this one was particularly well done. That and the only other videos I could find of Shooting Star performing Last Chance were of the band in more recent years and while I love my aging rockers for continuing to put it out there night after night sometimes the original holds up better.
At any rate, the message of the song is perhaps targeted for the raw energy of youth but it had an effect on me then and still resonates with me now. Let me know if you are hearing this again perhaps in a new way or for the first time.
When the stranger came to town All the people watched with wonder In their tattered clothes Gathered ‘round and raised their eyes up from the dirt And the stranger said to them I have been upon the mountain I have witnessed forces, like cannons That could ram you to the ground Stand up on your feet 'Cause your life is short as hell You could be dead tomorrow Today may be your Last chance to believe in yourself Your last chance to yell Your last chance to be good to yourself Your last chance to drink from life's well In the crowd a voice was heard Should we get them before they get you Should we strike the first blow He said no, no, no, you don't understand The enemy is in your heart Self-respect robbed by self-pity Look across the country All the people with their dreams dead in their hearts Stand up on your feet 'Cause your life is short as hell You could be dead tomorrow Today may be your Last chance to believe in yourself Your last chance to yell Your last chance to be good to yourself Your last chance to drink from life's well So drink from the well Oh yeah It could be your Last chance to believe in yourself Your last chance to yell Your last chance to be good to yourself Your last chance to drink from life's well Drink from the well Oh yeah Yeah Drink from the well
